GRAMEEN HAAT (rural market) acts as a rural service center since past. Vendors from distant places reach the haat very early in the morning and display the items he has brought to sell. Customers from nearby villages visit hats to buy their daily household requirements. what are actually sold in these markets basically ? various types of goods and services like rice, wheat, vegetables, sweets, clothes etc. in this photo the man is selling make up items for the village women, for example ribbon (fite), vermilion (sindoor), looking glass (aaina), nail polish (nokh palish), bindi (tip) etc. some of the sellers produce home based items and sales in a very reasonable price. rabindranath  tagore had a brilliant vision behind the active engagement of the village based producers and their household products to provide a local market so that rural resources can be best utilized. in modern times with advent of shopping mall and shopping complex idea of market development, grammen haat is suffering a serious threat. western culture is back dating this traditional village market.
